Class One

Superheroes

Wow! We’ve saved the world every day! Class 1 are the best superheroes in the whole wide world. Look at the photographs to see some of us dressed up and ready for action. You can also see our paintings. The really big picture is Flat Man. We made him up and he is brilliant. We even wrote a story all about him. You can read it for yourself…

Flat Man Story

Winter

Wintertime has given us lots of opportunities to think about how to keep warm. We have read lots of the stories by Nick Butterworth about Percy the Park Keeper. We made our role play area into Percy’s shed with lots of animals, dressing up clothes and blankets to keep everyone cosy. Thankyou to all the children who brought things from home – even a wheelbarrow and golf clubs.

We have done lots of scientific investigations about freezing and melting. We have frozen water in lots of different containers. We froze a huge block of stripy coloured ice with different things inside it. It was very interesting to watch it melt. We tried out other things as well – even a banana! Do you know what happens to sunflower oil in the freezer? Try it at home to find out. Our green washing up liquid changed colour and we don’t know why. We have sent an email to Oxford University asking them to tell us why this is. We’ll let you know what they say.

We have looked really carefully at trees with no leaves. We took photographs of trees near to school as well as looking at pictures on the internet. We painted trees using brushes of different thickness for different parts of the tree. We made line drawings of trees. We made pictures by blowing paint with a straw and added fingerprint robins. Have a look at the photographs of our work.

We were really lucky to have a visit from local artist Sue Lawty who came to show us how to make pictures using natural objects. The children practised looking really carefully at the shapes, sizes and colours of leaves, grasses, beech nuts etc. We were really pleased with the results and took LOTS of photographs.

Merry Christmas

December is one of our favourite months in class 1. Look at our photographs to see us all enjoying ourselves. We have baked cakes, dressed up, decorated our own class Christmas tree and made lots of glittery things to take home. Our concert was really good. It was called ‘Born in a Barn’. All the nursery children dressed as angels and did a lovely dance. The reception children were the cheeky mice who lived in the barn. We shared a Christmas party with our friends in class 2. There were lots of good games to play. At the end we even had a visit from Father Christmas!

Happy Christmas everyone. Have a super holiday. We will see you in January for lots more fun in class 1. Love from Mrs Williams and Mrs Marney xxx

Halloween and Bonfire Night

Look at our photographs…. We have been busy learning about Halloween and Bonfire Night. We have dressed up, made models, heard stories, made up poems, painted (ourselves as well as our pictures!), investigated liquids, made music, danced and lots more. We REALLY enjoyed making our huge bonfire night collage with splatter painting, glitter, and 3D fireworks. Our Guy Fawkes was brilliant. We stuffed clothes with newspaper to make him sit up. He went on the Bonfire at the Heptonstall Bowling Club. One of our favourite things was making chocolate apples on sticks – yum, yum!

Autumn

We have really enjoyed learning about autumn. Lots of us have brought leaves, seeds, berries etc to school for everyone to look at. We found lots of different colours of leaves including green, yellow, orange, red and brown. We even found some spotty ones! We have made pictures using our leaves. Look at our photographs. We have printed with them. We have made rubbings. We have sorted them. We have thought of some really good words to describe them. We have used books to find out which trees they are from. We HAVE been busy!

One of our favourite stories is ‘The Enormous Turnip’. We’ve really enjoyed acting out the story. Look at the photograph of our pictures of turnips. We got really messy making them!
