Class One Archive 2010-2011

Journeys and Transport

Cars, trains, bicycles, aeroplanes, boats, helicopters, buses, hot air balloons, hovercraft, cable cars, fire engines… and lots more. We have been learning about different vehicles and the journeys that people make using them. Children in the class have told us about lots of different experiences and have also brought photographs and souvenirs from different places they have visited. We have looked for the different places on the giant globe in our role play travel agents. They are a very well travelled bunch!

Have a look at our pictures of different vehicles. Some children chose to paint pictures and others chose collage. We have also been making models using our ‘mobilo’ construction kit.

Springtime

Did you see our colourful bunting and Easter bonnets in some of the shops? The haberdashery Ribbon Circus, The Old Tree House toy shop and The Heptonstall Deli all kindly displayed our bunting. People even asked if it was for sale! Hat Therapy generously gave us a whole window display for our Easter bonnets. Lots of people said how good they were. This photograph appeared in The Hebden Bridge Times newspaper.

Blackpool Zoo

We enjoyed a lovely day at the zoo. We saw lots of animals including giraffes, penguins and a tiger. The giraffes were really smelly! We saw a huge elephant with a really big bottom! The sea lion show was brilliant. The ‘Dinosaur Safari’ was good too. Have a look at our photographs to see us with some of the animals. You might even spot us eating ice lollies and having a ride on the miniature railway.

Class 1 are enjoying a dinotastic time...

We are learning lots about stegosaurus, iguanadon, pteranodon, tyrannosaurus, and diplodocus - to name only a few of the dinosaurs!

The sand pit is transformed into a prehistoric world. The children have set up a dinosaur museum with pictures, skeletons and fossils. There are junk model dinosaurs. A huge dinosaur is coming down the stairs which you can measure yourself against. We made life sized dinosaur footprints – look at the photograph – and they are small footprints!

We even have a dinosaur den which has attracted a very special visitor. A stegosaurus has been visiting our den during the night, leaving letters, cards and stickers! The children have been inspired to write back. They have left notes, letters, pictures, instructions, and posters to help Dilly to understand the world we live in today.

Chinese New Year

Look at some of the things we have done to learn about China and the New Year Festival. We have painted our own names in Chinese script, danced to Chinese music, had tea parties, danced inside a huge dragon, tried to eat using chopsticks, made lanterns, learnt about the animals of the New Year story, made lucky money envelopes and lots more. We’ve been really busy! As a reward for all our hard work we went to Halifax on the bus to visit a real Chinese restaurant. Everyone had the best time ever.

Cold Places

Our topic about cold places has nearly finished. We have talked about the winter in Heptonstall and what is special about this time of year. Our garden is looking very bare. We took pictures to keep and compare with the same plants in the summer. We learnt about how to help the birds and followed instructions to make our own bird feeders to take home.

Some animals live in really cold places. We have done research in books and on the internet to find out about them. Did you know that polar bears are born in dens underneath the snow? Or that adult penguins keep food in their beaks for their young chicks?

Christmas Preparations

We have had a brilliant time getting ready for Christmas. We have trimmed up our classroom and made lots of sparkly treasure to take home – it’s glitter-tastic! We were all brilliant as stars and shepherds in the Busy, Busy Bethlehem concert. Our Christmas party was really good too – and guess who came to visit just before we all went home.

The Gruffalo

This has been really good fun. We all know the story and can even act out parts of it using the masks we made on the computer. The role-play area is a deep, dark wood complete with pictures on the window, a cave, a log pile house and musical instruments for sound effects. Everyone has admired our pictures and collages. Even the sand tray was turned into a wood with sticks, stones and leaves. The dance programme was good too - we’re brilliant at Gruffalo faces! Mrs Marney has made Gruffalo crumble with apples and blackberries. Her Gruffalo cake was amazing.
