2010 - 2011

 

We are doing a whole school production of 'The Wizard of Oz'.

Class 3 are being the ozites.

 

 

On Wednesday 29th June we had our school sports day - luckily it was nice weather!

The children took part in five different races - sack race, shuttle run, skipping, obstacle and sprinting.

All the children were fantastic and the winning team on the day was coiners.

As part of National School Sports Week a new sport was introduced to the whole school.

The children really enjoyed learning how to play La Crosse.

We have been learning all about India.

We have learnt where India is, how to get there, what the weather is like there, the names and locations of towns and cities in India and what it's like to live in the Indian desert. We have dressed up in sari's and Indian clothing and had a go at Bollywood dancing PE

Next week we are learning about life in an Indian village, what it's like living in tropical India, what it's like to live in Mumbai. We're even doing some Indian cooking and having some henna designs painted onto our hands.

We made some Indian peacocks using our hand prints.

First we drew around our hands

Then we decorated the hand prints with henna designs and cut them out

  

Then we arranged the hand prints to make the peacocks tail.

 

 

We have been learning all about Hinduism.

We have used books and the internet to give us more information.

We have learnt where Hinduism comes from, how and where they worship and what it's called, what they use during worship, some of the Gods they worship and stories about them and we made clay diva lamp holders and decorated them.

 We have been learning all about the life and work of LS Lowry.

The children have learnt how to draw portraits, industrial landscapes and matchstick people in the style of Lowry and used the same colour palette that he used.

They even recreated a large version of one of LS Lowry's most famous paintings 'Going to the match'

Class 3's erupting volcano.

 

The children have been learning all about rocks and soils for their new topic.

They have performed practical and interactive investigations to test different rocks to see if they wear well, split easily, are permeable or not and whether or not they float.

They have researched the 3 different types of rocks and how they are made. They also looked at the scientific vocabulary you use when talking about rocks and soils. They have also learnt all about volcanoes and made books all about them by doing their own research, the children even had their own erupting volcano in the class!! 

    

  

   

Class 3 have learnt all about Easter.

They made a class book retelling the Easter story, they made Easter baskets, they tested their knowledge of Easter by doing a quiz, they made some Easter chick cakes and they also learnt how to make palm crosses which they demonstrated during the school's Easter service in St Thomas' church on the last day of term.

The children have spent 2 weeks learning all about King Arthur.

They have written their own myths and legends using characters they have created, they've written about the story of King Arthur, they wrote their names using Anglo Saxon runes, they designed their own coat of arms using a website on the internet, they used collage techniques to design and make a knight's shield and they have researched how to become a knight.

 

   

 

    

 

On Wednesday 30th March we had some visitors  from the Alternative Technology Centre in Hebden Bridge come into school to do a weaving workshop with each class.

We had a go at spinning, weaving and felting. It was alot of fun.

 

The children have spent a week learning all about UK weather.

They have kept a weather diary all week recording rainfall, temperature, cloud cover and wind speed. They have watched weather forecasts and written their own, identified clouds, looked at the different equipment used to measure or record weather and looked at how the weather differs across the UK depending on where you are in the country.

     

        

The children also did some weather experiments. They had a go at making a cloud in a glass and a mini tornado in a jar.

   

  

Comic Relief 2011

Children came to school in their pyjamas and we had a crazy hair competition.

Class 3 have been learning all about UK food crops.

They have learnt all about dairy farming, seasonal meat, vegetables and fruit, the different kinds of shops we can buy food from and the advantages and disadvantages of buying from them & the children wrote stories from the point of view of a potato describing how and when they're planted, the different stages of their growth and what they are used as when they are harvested. 

Class  3 have been learning all about light and shadows.

They now know what light sources are, what translucent, transparent and opaque mean, how shadows are made, how and why we have day and night and some interesting facts about the sun.

The children made pin hole cameras with Mr Heald and tested them to see how they worked.

             

They also made sundials and periscopes to help them understand how shadows are made and used to tell the time and how light can be reflected.

       

    

Children learnt all about relationships.They looked at friendship and families.

The children wrote poems entitled 'A Recipe for Friendship', made friendship ice cream cones, that describe themselves as friends and what they look for in a friend.

They also looked at who is in their family, who are their extended family and made information cards about themselves, where they live and their families.

 Class 3 have learnt all about materials and their properties.

The children planned and carried out an investigation to find out which material was best at absorbing water. They used an interactive activity on the internet to find out which materials are waterproof, flexible, strong and  transparent. They also used magnifying glasses to look at samples of materials much more closely.

  

 

The children also had a go at cooking some typical chinese teats.

They made spring rolls, sesame cookies & fortune cookies.

 As part of class 3's RE work this half term about festivals and celebrations they have learnt all about Chinese New Year.

They read the story about Chinese New Year which told them all about the animals that are celebrated, they made paper dragons, paper lanterns, Hong Bow red envelopes, they had a go at writing their names and 'happy new year' in chinese writing and finally the children learnt about what happens on each day of the 15 day celebration.

 Class 3 visited the building site. They had to wear high visibility jackets and safety helmets. They saw where the new building and the multi surface play area will be going. Wellies were a must have - it was extremely muddy!!

    

      

Children have learnt all about the countries of the UK.

They looked at and wrote poetry about being British. They also used atlases and the internet to find and locate hills, mountains, rivers, towns, cities and famous landmarks on maps of the UK

       

      

Class 3 learnt all about the life and work of Vincent Van Gogh.

The children recreated their own Van Gogh Starry Night pictures using different mediums - felt pens & pencil crayons, computer generated & oil pastels.

         

         

   

The children also recreated a large version of Van Gogh's Starry Night painting using paint. The picture had been enlarged and split into pieces so the children were responsible for a small section each of the final painting.

Class 3 learnt all about our local history.

They learnt about the Old Packhorse Bridge in Hebden Bridge, the battle which took place over it and David Hartley and the Cragg Coiners.

They even had a go at coin clipping and making new coins for themselves.

         

         

Class 3 also had a vist from Mrs Cynthia Maddock, a local lady who has lived in the area her whole life. She talked to the children about what it was like to live here in the past.

        

The children also explored the local village finding the location of some old photo's which had been taken and recreating them, taking new photo's of the same location.

Children had a party lunch and played musical statues, musical bumps, pass the parcel,team games with balloons and the chocolate game

Class 3 did some Christmas themed cooking. They made peppermint creams, chocolate reindeers, chocolate truffles and marshmalllow crispies.

     

         

Class 3 learnt all about the Jewish festival of Hannukah.

They even had a go at cooking some traditional Jewish food.

    

     

Following class 3's topic about Ancient Egypt they have been learning all about the story of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat.

They watched the musical and used art, drama and role play to develop their understanding of the story      

     

The children learnt all about where Egypt is and what it's like there, why the River Nile is important, mummification and the discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb.

The children also made funeral masks, canopic jars, 3D pyramids, cartouches with their names on in hieroglyphics, sunset pyramid pictures, clay obelisks and tomb paintings on papyrus. We also turned part of the classroom into and Egyptian tomb.
