Mathematics is a creative and highly inter-connected discipline that has been developed over centuries, providing the solution to some of history’s most intriguing problems. It is essential to everyday life, critical to science, technology and engineering, and necessary for financial literacy and most forms of employment. A high-quality mathematics education therefore provides a foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason mathematically, an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics, and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject.

National Curriculum 2014

We follow the 2014 National Curriculum and implement it by following the White Rose Maths Hub scheme of work and planning. We use their small steps approach to aid the delivery of Maths lessons to ensure children develop a deeper understanding of the mathematics and when needed we alter the time we spend on units of learning depending on the cohorts and their needs.

Maths is usually taught as a discrete subject, but cross curricular links are made when needed. Lessons include fluency, reasoning and problem-solving style questions to help embed learning and deepen the children’s mathematics understanding.

Previously taught knowledge is regularly revisited through daily fluent in 5/quick questions, weekly arithmetic work, times table work and during lessons.

Children are teacher assessed every half term and are assessed formally at the end of each half term. At the end of Year 2 and Year 6 the children complete formal SATs assessments. Progress and attainment are reported to parents.
